Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Estimate tax on investment profits in India.

Estimated capital gains tax ₹0
Capital gain₹0
Estimated tax rate used—
Gain after estimated tax₹0

Important: This is an indicative estimate, not a tax filing calculation. The equity option assumes qualifying transactions subject to STT and uses the general post-23 July 2024 rates. It does not account for all eligibility conditions, losses, surcharge, exemptions, grandfathering, or other adjustments. The other-assets option is simplified and may not match the tax treatment of your asset. Consult a qualified tax professional before filing.

Have you sold shares, mutual funds, land, property or another investment and want to estimate the tax on your profit? The Capital Gains Tax Calculator on Jai Jagdamba News helps you estimate potential tax on investment gains by entering your acquisition cost, sale value and applicable tax assumptions.

Capital gains tax in India depends on several factors, including the type of asset, purchase and sale dates, holding period, applicable tax provisions and available exemptions. Use this calculator for an initial estimate, then verify the applicable rules before filing your income tax return.

What Is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital gains tax is the income tax that may apply when you make a profit by transferring a capital asset. Such assets can include shares, mutual fund units, land, buildings and certain other investments.

For example, suppose you purchase an investment for ₹1,00,000 and later sell it for ₹2,50,000. If there are no other adjustments, your capital gain is ₹1,50,000.

Capital gain = Sale value − Acquisition cost − Eligible transfer expenses

The taxable gain may differ from the simple profit calculation because specific tax rules, exemptions, losses and other adjustments can apply.

How to Use the Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Follow these steps to estimate tax on your investment profit:

  1. Select the asset category: Choose listed equity or equity-oriented mutual funds, or the simplified other-assets option.
  2. Select the gain type: Choose short-term capital gains (STCG) or long-term capital gains (LTCG).
  3. Enter the acquisition cost: Add the amount paid to purchase the asset.
  4. Enter the sale value: Provide the amount received or the relevant sale consideration.
  5. Add eligible expenses: Enter eligible expenses directly related to the transfer, where applicable.
  6. Review the tax assumptions: For qualifying equity LTCG, check the remaining annual threshold. For the simplified other-assets STCG estimate, enter an assumed applicable tax rate.
  7. Calculate the estimate: Review the estimated gain, tax and gain remaining after estimated tax.

The result is an illustration rather than a final tax computation. Some assets require different calculations and cannot be accurately covered by a single simplified rate.

Short-Term and Long-Term Capital Gains

Capital gains are broadly classified as short-term or long-term. The applicable holding period depends on the asset and the relevant tax rules.

Short-term capital gains (STCG)

Short-term gains arise when an asset is sold within the holding period prescribed for short-term classification.

For qualifying listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual fund units subject to the relevant Securities Transaction Tax conditions, the applicable Section 111A rate is generally 20% for transfers on or after 23 July 2024.

Other short-term gains may be taxed under different provisions, including the taxpayer’s applicable income tax rates.

Long-term capital gains (LTCG)

Long-term gains arise when an asset meets the applicable long-term holding-period requirement.

For eligible listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual fund units covered by Section 112A, the general rate for transfers on or after 23 July 2024 is 12.5% on qualifying aggregate gains exceeding the applicable annual threshold of ₹1.25 lakh.

Other long-term assets can have different conditions, exemptions and tax calculations. For example, certain land or building transactions involving property acquired before 23 July 2024 may qualify for a special comparison of tax under the old and amended rules for eligible resident individuals and Hindu Undivided Families.

Always check the rules applicable to your asset and transfer date before relying on a rate.

Example of Capital Gains Calculation

Suppose an investor buys an eligible listed equity investment for ₹1,00,000 and sells it for ₹2,50,000.

  • Acquisition cost: ₹1,00,000
  • Sale value: ₹2,50,000
  • Capital gain before other adjustments: ₹1,50,000

If the gain qualifies for Section 112A and the investor has the full ₹1,25,000 annual threshold available, the amount above that threshold would be ₹25,000.

At an illustrative 12.5% rate, the basic tax on ₹25,000 would be ₹3,125 before applicable cess and any other adjustments.

This example assumes the asset qualifies for the provision and does not account for losses, exemptions, other eligible gains or the investor’s complete tax position. It is not a universal calculation for every share, fund or investor.

What Can Affect Your Capital Gains Tax?

Several factors can change the amount of tax payable:

  • Asset category: Listed shares, equity mutual funds, property, gold and debt-oriented investments may have different rules.
  • Holding period: The time between acquisition and transfer can determine whether the gain is short-term or long-term.
  • Transfer date: Changes in tax law may affect the applicable rate and calculation method.
  • Eligible expenses: Certain expenses related to acquisition, improvement or transfer may affect the computation, subject to the applicable rules.
  • Exemptions and losses: Eligible reinvestment exemptions and capital losses may change the taxable amount.
  • Other tax adjustments: Surcharge, cess and individual circumstances can affect the final liability.

For these reasons, an online calculator should be used as a planning aid, not as a replacement for a complete tax assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Capital Gains Tax Calculator free?

The calculator on this page is designed to estimate capital gains tax using the inputs and assumptions you provide.

Is capital gains tax the same for all investments?

No. Tax treatment depends on the asset type, holding period, transfer date and applicable provisions. Different investments can be subject to different tax rates and conditions.

What is the current LTCG tax rate on eligible listed equity investments?

For qualifying gains under Section 112A from transfers on or after 23 July 2024, the general rate is 12.5% on aggregate eligible gains above the applicable ₹1.25 lakh annual threshold, subject to the relevant conditions.

How is short-term capital gains tax calculated on listed equity?

For qualifying transfers covered by Section 111A on or after 23 July 2024, the general rate is 20%, subject to eligibility conditions and applicable adjustments.

Does selling property attract capital gains tax?

A property sale may result in taxable capital gains, but the calculation depends on factors such as the acquisition and transfer dates, holding period, eligible costs and exemptions. Property transactions may require a separate, more detailed calculation than the simplified tool provides.

Can I use this calculator for gold or debt mutual funds?

You can use the other-assets option only as a rough illustration. Gold, debt-oriented funds and other investments may have specific tax rules, so the displayed estimate may not reflect your actual tax liability.

Does the calculator include all exemptions and deductions?

No. It does not fully model all exemptions, capital-loss adjustments, surcharge, grandfathering provisions or other individual tax circumstances.
